How to recognize dry skin?
There are three main characteristics that determine it without any shadow of a doubt. These are rather simple sensations: the skin of the face often appears inflamed and red, pulling after cleansing, with a dull complexion and rough to the touch. If you notice these symptoms on your facial skin, then you undeniably have dry skin!
But what happens to our skin when it becomes dry?
Dry skin is a consequence of the weakening of the lipid film, the very thin protective layer naturally produced on the skin's surface. This hydrolipidic film forms an important barrier that keeps the skin hydrated, nourished and protected from external agents. Furthermore, it regulates the passage of substances that the skin absorbs. In dry skin, the lipid film is weakened and is no longer able to perform its correct protective functions. This means that the water evaporates faster, resulting in tissue dehydration. The skin becomes fragile and sensitive, easily exposed to external aggressions and the climate, accelerating skin aging processes.
In dry skin the lipid film is weakened
When the function of the barrier, i.e. the hydrolipidic film of our skin, does not perform the necessary protective functions, the water evaporates more quickly with the consequent dehydration of the tissues. The skin is very fragile and sensitive because it is without protection and is easily exposed to external aggressions and climatic factors with the consequent acceleration of skin aging processes.
The hydrolipidic film of the skin is composed of:
-
95% of fat component and skin ceramides that limit the evaporation of water.
-
5% from water-soluble molecules that retain water, keeping the skin hydrated.
The Main Causes of Dry Skin:
It is not easy to make a list of the causes behind dry skin, the factors that cause dehydration of the skin are many, in principle we can make a short list:
-
Genetic predisposition
-
A hormonal influence
-
A decrease in the activity of the sebaceous glands
-
Taking medications
-
The use of aggressive detergents for cleaning
-
Age and the gradual decrease in sebum production
